The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
