RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
