European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
