Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
