Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
